Without a strong foundation of mutual trust, relationships function poorly. This is not to say that one should press forward in blind trust without assessing all situations on its merit.
Win / Win
Dealings within relationships should be approached from a position of consideration for the optimal outcome of both parties. The relationship ought to be mutually beneficial with none of the parties seeking to gain the upper hand at the expense of his/her colleague.
Long Term Commitment
Parties should operate under the assumption that without trust and win / win outcomes the relationship is unsustainable.
